t the trip was worthwhile, these were the longest 2 weeks of my life=2E<SPAN=

=A0 </SPAN=3EWhen I returned it was amazing to see how much he had changed=2E=
<SPAN style=3D'mso-spacerun: yes'=3E=A0 </SPAN=3EHe=92d matured in appearanc=

I missed seeing his first smile and the first time he rolled over=2E<SPAN st=

nd the surgery was a complete success=2E<SPAN style=3D'mso-spacerun: yes'=3E=
=A0 </SPAN=3ESeth arrived home from hospital in 24 hours with 2 bravery awar=

 to obtain Joint Custody of my children=2E When I first asked about it, my s=
olicitor told me not to bother; custody was always given to the women and ev=
en 'bad' women who had long histories of irresponsibility were known to get =

ralia today is that mum gets custody of the children and dad (hopefully) get=
s access and an obligation to pay Child Support=2E=A0 Children from broken m=
arriages are therefore most likely to find themselves facing a life without =
the ongoing, day-to-day involvement of their own personal father figure and =
male role model=2E=A0 The Fatherhood Foundation has already noted the variou=
s effects on children of =91fatherlessness=92 and the absence of positive ma=
le role models - poverty, lower performance at school, increase in crime, po=
tential drug abuse and=A0a cost to the economy of $3=2E5 billion per annum,j=
ust to name a few=2E<BR=3E<BR=3EWith respect to step-parenting, then, if one=
 or both parents re-marry, children from broken marriages are most likely to=
 end up living with a step-father, and having occasional contact with a step=
-mother=2E=A0 In my view, a step-father is uniquely placed to play a major r=
ole in children's lives=2E=A0 But what exactly is that role=3F=A0 Should the=
 kids call you 'dad' or use your given name=3F=A0 Should you be involved in =
discipline=3F=A0 How do the finances work - are you expected to contribute t=
o their basic needs or just buy ice creams once in a while=3F=A0=A0 Can you =
set boundaries=3F=A0 Where do you draw the line=3F<BR=3E<BR=3EThese are all =
questions which confronted me when I became a step-father just 8 months ago=2E=
=A0 My biggest hurdle by far was (and still is)=A0trying to figure out exact=
ly what my role is=2E=A0 I have always been conscious of not over-stepping t=
he mark being seen as trying to take over from the kid=92s real father=2E=A0=
 I was tending to hold back from giving the kids my total attention and invo=
lvement=2E=A0 I was stopping myself short of loving them=2E<BR=3E<BR=3EA fri=
end of my wife's, however, offered the following advice which I found very h=
elpful=2E=A0 She said: 'Don't stress about overstepping the mark or subsumin=
g the biological father=92s role, as this will only give the kids two half-i=
nvolved dads=2E The kid=92s father cannot be there for them every day so it'=
s now your job to fill in'=2E=A0 She said: 'My advice is to treat the kids a=
s 100% yours - what they need is a day-to-day 100% committed and involved fa=

d me that my wife chose me not only to be her husband, but also to be the st=
ep-father of her children, and that not only did I have a right, but I had a=
n absolute responsibility not to hold back - for the kid=92s sake=2E=A0 Stra=
ngely, I have found I can do all this and still ensure that the kids don't s=
ee me some kind of intruder who took over and tried to push their father out=

 my wife's family and the lady he was committing adultery with - her family =
